No, it’s not a mind altering substance from the sixties. LCD stands for “Liquid-Crystal display”. This technology is used in laptop screen, desktop monitors and HDTVs. They are lighter and consume less power than other displays.
Liquid crystals are rod-shaped molecules in the display that spiral when exposed to an electrical charge. Light passing through makes the desired images appear. There are two kinds of LCDs: monochrome (which appear grey) and color.
There are three basic kinds of LCD displays: passive-matrix, active-matrix, and dual-scan. Active-matrix screens look best, but are more expensive because they contain a transistor for each pixel which prevents image quality from being lost between scans.
Huh? OK, let’s just say active-matrix is fancier and leave it at that.
