Wi-Fi Sharing

Let’s say you have Wi-Fi (wireless) and you live in an apartment and you want to share your internet connection with a friend who also has wi-fi and can reach your signal. Is it legal for you to share your high-speed DSL connection?

Probably not. Check the contract with your broadband provider—Verizon and AT&T both prohibit sharing.

Some contracts prohibit hooking up more than one computer to the connection (even if they are in your own home). You may even be prevented from running more than one computer through a router unless you “lease” extra IP addresses for an additional fee.

Your provider may look the other way, but others monitor your connection or have ways of catching you.

Be sure to read your contract!
