One issue could be that your disc type isn’t compatible with your DVD player. Some DVD players will only play DVD+R or DVD+RW discs and some only play DVD-R or DVD-RW. Check your DVD player’s documentation to find out what type of DVDs it plays or go to the manufacturer’s website to find the information.
It’s also possible that your disc quality is too low. Some DVD players won’t play a disc if it’s not high quality or in good shape.
Also make sure you are actually burning a DVD to play on a DVD player and not just copying files to the DVD.
Also, the age of your DVD player may be a factor. Newer DVD players will usually play them, but some older models will not. And watch out for labels. Paper stick-on labels might prevent your DVD from playing correctly.

8 years ago, I tried using Windows Movie Maker, and after much exasperation decided it wasn’t designed to make movies for regular DVD players, but just for computer playback! But, my computer came with Arcsoft Showbiz, so you might want to check if you have it already!? my new computer came with it also, now called: “TotalMedia Suite”!

No mention of finalization was noticed!. If: Your player will play its own burned DVDs and no others will, it is possible they are not being finalized. However, this may not be the case with your videos. It is the norm on some types of burners.
I have a VHS to DVD unit which requires finalization before the cd will play on my Blue Ray player, or any other one also!
It has a menu that you have to apply separately to finalize the dvd so it will play in other players! Check with the dvd manufacturing information to see if this is correct. Maybe the drivers for your computer needs updating etc. Good luck
One thing that I found helped, was the program called Nero. It walks you through the process of making a proper DVD, and makes sure it will play on a DVD when you finish. Or on a computer if you want too. But the tips already on here also apply, about compatibility of devices, and discs. Pinnacle Sudio 16 is a good program, but I found Nero to be better.
