Help! I Can’t Restore From Restore Point

Hi I hope you can help me solve a problem with my computer, below I think I have supplied you with all the information you requested, if I have missed anything out please let me know and I will endeavour to try and retrieve and send it to you:

Make: Hewlett Packard
Model: HP G56 Notebook PC

Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1

Installed memory (RAM): 3.00GB (2.74 GB usable)
Local Disk (C 🙂 217GB free of 281 GB

The problem I have is with System Restore, I can create a restore point manually and one is created automatically but I am not able to restore my computer back to a previous restore point, I have tried several restore points but get the same result. The computer goes through the operation but after completion I get a message as listed below:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s file and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source; %SystemRoot%\registration Destination: ComPlusStaging,
I have tried two recommendations as stated below:

1) Start computer up and perform the System Restore in safe mode.

2) a. Click Start, All programs and then Accessories. Right Click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
B. In the Command Prompt window type “sfc /scannow” (without quotes) and then press Enter.
C. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check for the issue.

Neither of these recommendations solved the problem, my computer did get a bad virus on it back in December 2012 which was removed successfully by a professional in a computer shop but as I have not had to perform a System Restore before now I do not know if it worked before or the virus disabled it. I hope you know how and would be gratefully if you could tell me step-by-step how to cure this problem.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Alan.

First, are you having a problem with your computer that you need to restore to a previous state, or are certain programs not working? I am not sure why you need to use the system restore, as you don’t mention what is causing you to need to restore. However, in researching the issue, I found a few things that may be of help.

First, make sure you check your disk space in your restore options. The slider should be at about 20%  under the Create a Restore Point options.

Another major issue I saw when looking into this is making sure to disable all your Antivirus programs when attempting to use a restore point. One that especially caused problems was Norton Security. Be certain to turn off Norton Tamper Protection on the product as it will block all restore attempts. Be sure that when you are done with your restore, you do enable your Antivirus again.

As I am not sure what is causing you to need the system restore option, but another thing you could do is to boot up to the Last Known Good Configuration, generally by pressing the F8 key at start up. Or you could attempt a clean boot to see if you can troubleshoot programs that may be interfering with your system restore.

If you have a serious problem with the computer and can’t get system restore to work after trying all these, the best solution might be a reinstallation of Windows using your installation CD.

  1. Hate to break it to you, WorldStart, but it’s been years since a computer was shipped with an installation CD. Big bummer here, too. There were times when I could have used such a disk; they just do NOT provide them now.

  2. I have also had the same problem with the System Restore. I found booting it up in Safe Mode makes it work. I would like to know why it only works in safe mode.
