iPad Battery Care: All You Need to Know

Terri B from Pennsylvania writes:

Does an iPad battery need calibration like a laptop? I just read about letting the battery drain on my laptop, which I do…but how about an iPad?

Apple devices, like many modern laptops, use what are called Lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are very durable and do not need a lot of care and attention, but in an iPad they cannot be replaced, so it is important that you look after them to ensure that they last as long as possible. Here are some tips to get the most our of your iPad battery.

1. Avoid Extreme Temperatures – Where possible, try to avoid exposing your iPad to very cold or very hot temperatures. That means don’t leave it in your car in the summer, or in the winter. Apple recommend an operating temperature between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and even suggest removing certain types of cases during charging in case of overheating.

2. Update iOS – Ensuring your iOS software is as up to date as it should be is another important factor in maximizing your battery life. Why? Apple often release software updates that are designed to tweak battery life. You can check for updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

In iOS 8.1, you can also go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage to see which apps are using up the majority of your battery power. Some apps in this list will say “Background Activity” next to them. This means that they run in the background when they are not being used, and therefore require power constantly. Apps like Mail will typically appear here because it is always going to be checking for your latest email. If you see apps that you don’t want to run in the background, you can go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and choose which ones you want to allow to run in the background by toggling the switch next to each app.

3. Store at 50% charge – If you don’t think you will use your iPad for an extended period of time, (read weeks or months), then Apple recommend that you charge it to about 50% power before your store it. Do not fully charge or fully discharge your device. This is not good for the overall health of your battery. As above, the best advice is to store it at room temperature.

With these tips in mind, you should get many years of trouble free use from your iPad.
