Apple’s USB C – One Port To Rule Them All?

Apple’s new line of MacBooks feature only one port – it’s called a USB-C . Roughly the size of a micro USB, it performs many of the same function sthat port does on most Android devices – it’s the charging cable and can also be used to power a peripheral. It can also be used to transfer data and to output a video signal.  According to Apple this port takes the place of power, USB, display, HDMI & VGA ports and is 1/3 the size of a standard USB port.

If you want to plug a device with another type of connection in to your new MacBook, you’ll need an adapter.  This probably means the end of Thunderbolt cables for desktops and laptops and maybe lightning cables for iPhones and iPads. The USB -C connection is small enough to work with those devices.

  1. Bad idea. The charge function would need daily use just to maintain the battery, making it unavailable for other devices.

  2. One port is too restrictive. My wife has a Dell Inspiron and has the power plugged in to run it as the battery died. Her other ports are in use for USB flash drives, wireless mouse and backup and sometimes a tablet. Apple is making itself too exclusive.
Regarding your mouse scanner: no way! I have a wireless mouse on my desktop and will not go back to a wired mouse just so I can scan something every 17 weeks or so.

    1. Fred, you wouldn’t have to switch exclusively to this mouse. You could simply plug it in when you needed to scan something.

      1. This seems a limited view and restrictive. Would you know the rationale for going in this direction?

  3. The idea of only 1 port is ridiculous ! This is Apple trying to find justification for yet another cable change. Shame on you Apple !

  4. Agree with others…more ports are needed. Just want to say that cables with usb plugs that disconnect from the 110 wall plugs are genius. My kindle charger cable and my Samsung phone charger cable are interchangeable which makes life a lot sweeter.

  5. Bad idea for customers, but a simply ploy by the company to increase sales of the cord as an accessory. Hope they quickly wise up, recall all of the product, and replace the single plug with a minimum of two, at least one of which is USB. Won’t even consider purchasing this item until it is compatible.

  6. All I can say is what is Apple thinking. You need more then one port , for external drives , thumb backup drives , external DVD drives and on & on. Come on Apple get with the program !!
