Find What You Need With Google Advanced Image Search

Want to get more accurate results when using Google Images? Although Google Images is extremely accurate anyway, you may want to narrow down search results based on licenses, color, keywords and file type. Perhaps you want an image that is free to use on a website or an image that has purple colors only.

In this article, you’ll learn how to use Google Advanced Image Search so you can narrow down your search results and get images that are accurate to exactly what you want.

Let’s begin!

Open up a browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer. Your preferred browser should be on your Desktop, Start Menu or Task Bar. You need to double click on the icon.

Type www.google.com into the address bar of your browser. Google should load up and you can then progress to the next step.

The next thing you need to do is click on the “Images” link on the top right corner of the Google homepage. This will bring you to Google Images, which you will be using to find your images and also, to use the Google Advanced Image Search option.

Type into the search bar what images you’d like to get. For this demo, I want to get images of the night sky so I’ll type in “night sky” into the search bar.

The results page will come up. This is the regular image search results, but we want the Advanced results. For this, click on the Settings Wheel in the right corner of the page. A small drop-down menu should pop up. Click on “Advanced Image Search”.

You will be brought to a page with the various options and settings. Here is a brief walk-through of them.

License – Do you want to use the image in your webpages, blog posts or business? By choosing the right license, you can find free images which are royalty free and you are allowed to use commercially.

Color – If you only want black and white images, or sepia images, this option will do that for you. Just select from the options. If you only want a particular colour in the image such as red, you can also select that. For example, if you are looking for roses images and only want pink roses and not yellow ones, select pink.

Image Size – Sometimes, you might only want a certain size. You might not like small images so you can choose only a certain size to show up.

File Type – If you don’t like Animated Images or Clipart and don’t want them to show up in results, you can select which results you’d like to obscure. To do this, click on “Type of Image” and select the type of image you want.

Then, click on “Advanced Search”. It’s the blue button at the end of the page.

Then check out your results filtered according to your needs.
