While I worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society last year, one of the things I got to see was the process of creating an oral history project. It is fascinating work with far more moving parts to it than I first imagined. It makes me look at completed oral history projects in a very different light. I was reminded of that when I discovered today’s site – VOCES Oral History Project.
The project is brought to you by the University of Texas at Austin and aims to document and create awareness of the contribution of Latinos and Latinas during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
I love that you when you arrive at the site they automatically show you the four ways you can browse their collection with The Orignal Collection, DOCU-VOZ, FOTO-VOZ, and ALTA-VOZ sections all laid out on the page.
I recommend before you dive into those categories that you check out the introduction beneath them. It does a great job of laying out the history of the project, its goals, and how they bring them to fruition.
There are two other really cool sections to the site that you’ll find on the navigation bar: Browse Stories, and Learn to Interview.
Browse Stories offers you different way you can check out the collection. For example, you could browse it alphabetically, categorically, or by locale.
Learn to Interview provides both a “How To” video and a kit that will help you learn to interview people for a project like this.
