Tex, I’m starting to get the feeling you dislike Windows almost as much as you enjoy wordplay. But I’ll be glad to address why we focus on a lot of Windows 10.
Those are the questions we’re asked because Windows is the most popular home operating system. Even if I were to go on a campaign against Windows PCs (which I wouldn’t because I actually like my Windows 10 PC), I don’t think it would do very much good. What readers need is help with what they are using. I could also go on a campaign against automatic cars in favor of stick shifts, but I don’t think I’d have much success at swaying folks back to manual.
Currently Windows 7 is on about 50% of PCs with Windows 10 coming in at 27%, Windows 8 at 8% of PCs, and Windows XP at 5%. Roughly about 90% of PCs use Windows and a growing number are moving to Windows 10. I’m not about to encourage anyone to move to a system like XP with no security support. The recent Wannacry ransomware attacks show what a disaster an unsupported system can be. But I have discussed going back to Windows 7 when people have asked. Plus we talk about using Mac or Linux systems as alternatives.
And, as I said, I disagree with you about Windows 10. I like it. And my Surface Pro running Windows 10 is the most stable PC I’ve ever used. But I understand completely if you don’t and I do look forward to seeing your colorful insults to Microsoft.

I do not like the way(s) Win 10 seems to “hide” many things from us – In Win 10 mail – where is the place where I can add email contacts – W10 does not tell me and when I do arrive at the peoples page it does not tell me how to add – there is no form, etc. – also my Comcast will not transfer my contacts from my previous Win Live Mail to its contact listings but will transfer other company’s! I’m not giving up my win 7 from my laptop. However, I think W10 is slightly more stable than msoft’s previous OSes, but I still don’t really like it. I want to add Ubuntu (or similar) if I can. thanks for reading this. JJ
Windows XP and Windows 7 are both slated for end of life experiences. And, yes, Windows is the most popular OS on the planet (for desktops/laptops). For everyday business use it is my personal favorite because of the wide variety of software, not it’s interface or performance. I am, by experience, more of a Unix/Linux guy at heart. The concept of a tablet interface on a desktop (Windows 8) was the worst idea ever. So, Tex, if you don’t like it, put yourself at risk, but leave the rest of us to our own, more secure devices.
And, while thinking about it, I’m an Android user as well. MAC products are too locked down and limiting for my likes.
I have a fairly new computer (2 months) running Win10. The computer is screaming fast (Intel Core I-7 processor, etc.), and it runs rings around my XP machine that I was forced to retire for failures of aging and too much unsupported software. I’m not having a lot of trouble with Win10 because I’ve been at it a long time. I got my first computer in 1983. OS was 8-bit CPM. No one had ever heard of Bill Gates, and everyone was certain “Big Blue” had missed the parade. That computer was hot for its day, with 64 KB of RAM and a 5-MB HD. Nothing was automatic. You had to make your own cable so you could talk to the 300-baud modem (“ATS04”; “ATDT …”). You had to write the skip table for HD bad sectors yourself. You had to turn off the HD before powering off the machine (HDOFF) or the heads would land randomly somewhere, leaving you rewriting the skip table. Mostly, you wrote your own programs. My crowd favored APC Basic. I have so far managed to evolve along with the machines. But adapting to Win10 is hardly the same as liking it, which I don’t. When MS arrived on the scene, we referred to the MS DOS OS as “mess dos.” It still is. In my free time, I’m looking for decent programs to replace the arbitrary, contrary, convoluted crap MS provides. I seriously thought about going with a Linux OS, but I don’t think I’m quite tech savvy enough to manage it.
By the way, my pet car (“Tweetie Pie”) is a Firebird WS-6 with a 5.7L V8 engine, Hearst linkage, 6 forward gears, and other cool stuff. He’s also screaming fast.
I to have an i-7 processor machine and it was screamingly fast (In the beginning).
However as many on here have said … the Updates from MS turn your computer into a piece of junk.
I still have a fast boot up but try using the computer and the screen refreshes all the icons (In fact I have to boot the machine and leave it for around 5 minutes before i can click on an Icon and get a program running.
Also after another update was downloaded Cortana search stopped working and I have to click “Run” and type in : C:\windows\system32\cftmon.exe
every time I reboot or shut down.
I despise Win10. Am in total agreement with Tex. Every time it has upgrades it fouls up many things on my computer. Bring back XP where we had a choice of upgrading! I do not appreciate Microsoft having control of MY computer.
I am a Windows guy and love all the tips you share with us. I have learned and continue to learn so much from you over the hears. Don’t stop!

I am running W 7 , and will continue to do so from here out. Even when it runs out. Microsoft has done nothing good since XP , Vista was a mistake , so they tried to correct it with W 7 which helped , W 8 was another mistake like Vista . Now 10 which to my opinion is as bad as Vista and 8. The problem is they want everything touch screen . They should have made 10 only for tablets and such , and not on laptops and desktops .
What Microsoft should have done was fixed everything needed for XP , and charged for it , ( Like an upgraded service pack , that you had to pay for .)
With Microsoft it’s all about MONEY .

I can understand Tex’s frustration to some extent. As a blind guy, and getting older, I find it a bit tiring to have to learn a whole new way of using my comp at the whim of Microsoft. But, things change, and I’m glad I finally woke up and moved, at least to W7. A lot of us found 8/8.1 to be annoying with its swing away from the keyboard, to some extent. But, W10 has fixed that for most people. I can’t wait to move to 10, as soon as I upgrade my RAM.
My question is why wouldn’t anyone want Windows 10. I want the added protection for viruses and ransomware. World Start has many help areas to assist you in navigating a great program. They will answer any of your questions. I am elderly and I learned to navigate easily. New is always scary but give it a real chance. Thanks World Start.
Don’t like 10…love 7…10 controls everything and messes up everything with the updates. You set your busy times (for them to stay out of your life) and that is exactly when they bother. Even NORTON can send messages that don’t ruin what you are doing. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!
We live in a world where there’s constant new technological advances. People that can’t handle that are the ones that cry the changes are for the worse to justify their lack of adaptiveness. So many people jumped on the “I hate Vista” bandwagon but if you pushed them to find out what it was they didn’t like you found out they had no answer, they just heard it was bad so they wanted to be like the rest of the crowd and condemn it.
I had XP and loved the upgrade to Vista as much as I loved the upgrade to Win 7. I found 8 and 8.1 confusing but loved the Win 10, it’s a lot like Win 7. If these people that say they hate Win 10 would take the time to see the advantages of the upgraded changes like the Start Menu and a personal fav of mine the ribbon on the folders they would find out how great it really is. Like I said earlier, for some people it’s just easier to gripe than to get off their lazy butts and learn, they are the kind of people that will always take the easy route.
To Cynthia and the rest of the people at World Start that have written so many useful and helpful articles over the years, I would just like to say thank you and keep up the good work. We laugh at the people who used to think the world was flat. I think there’s a direct comparison between them and the people who think we should still be using XP.
I agree with Patricia, adapting to Win 10 is not the same as liking it. I am coping as best as I can, but not liking it at all. I also am coping with a new PC that has a flat space bar & no right & left clicker. Try editing with that! My saving grace is my track ball. That I love. I’d give up Win 10 any day, but never my track ball. Great conversations, Trish
I agree too. Am I alone in preferring Windows 8.
My chief niggle with both 8 & 10 is not being able to freely arrange photo folders. The other is in stopping it from installing downloaded updates at inconvenient times. the greater my hurry, the longer it takes! Any advice welcomed.
I like Windows 10 just fine, but I feel exactly like Jerry – they should have left the “touch” part to tablets & phones. When I first got Windows 10, I had Cloudeight go into it and make the desktop look identical to Windows 7, that overcame the biggest drawback as far as I was concerned. And while they were in there, they removed all of the “bloat-ware” that they found. Also the “free” McAfee that came with it. I subscribed to Emsisoft instead. That’s what Cloudeight recommends. I’m also a Computer-lover. I intensely dislike Laptops.
