Lots of folks are switching to Mac and Chromebook systems, but not as many as you might think. Numbers from Netmarketshare show that 89% of folks using desktops and laptops are still using the Windows operating system. Mac OS is a distant second at just under 8%, while Linux has actually seen a significant increase from the last few years and is found on 2.31% of laptops and desktops. Chromebooks haven’t even hit the 1% mark yet.
When you break down Windows users by operating system, Windows 7 is still the king. It’s found on 45% of laptops and desktops. But don’t forget, Windows 7 support ends two years from now on January 14, 2020. So, if you’re one of those users, it’s time to start planning for an upgrade or a new device.
Windows 10 is in second place on just under 27% of devices. Windows 8.1 is found on just under 7% of PCs.
Windows XP has dropped to just about 8%. But even that number is troubling since this OS hasn’t been supported for nearly 4 years. Windows Vista is also no longer supported, but it’s found on less than 1% of devices.
I’d like to do a thoroughly unscientific survey and ask which operating system you’re using. Let me know in the comments. If you’re using Windows 7, have you made plans to upgrade?
windows 10, I accidentally hit the mouse key when I was moving it and installed it. Its not that bad since my desktop still looks like windows 7 and I can still find everything. The only problem I’ve encountered is getting my desktop back after a system update. May be a function of needing a newer computer.
Windows 10 on laptop and Windows type tab.
Still using Windows7 as I have 2 more years to use it and as I am 76 that may be enough! 🙂
windows 10
Win10
Windows 10 on desktop and laptop. Had them since they first came out. Best windows ever.
W10
Windows 10 on my 3 desktops and my laptop. I thought Windows 7 was the best until Windowws 10 came out and I’m loving it.
Testing…
Hey, that one worked! I have Mac High Sierra on the laptop and Windows 10 on the desktop.
I have Win 10 on a desktop and 2 laptops. I’ve had 10 since it came out. I’m 74 and still learning new things about 10 thanks to Cyn Mackley!!!
I’m using Windows 10 and really liking it. I had Cloudeight put the Windows 7 Desktop on here for me, tho – I didn’t like the Win10 desktop with all the Tiles.
Comment to James McBee: I’m 87 and still loving the computer with Windows 10, you’ve got plenty of time left. Go ahead and get Windows 10 also! My friend (using Windows 7) is 93! Nobody ever said there was an age limit here
I upgraded from XP to Win 7 in 2016 at the time when MS was messing with peoples lives by pestering them to upgrade to WIN 10. – like the annoying obnoxious furniture salesman who follows one around the showroom! With every security download and Settings mess-up, I was determined to have nothing to do with Win 10 and found ways to block them. I know I’m good with Win 7 for a few more years but will eventually have to switch to Win 10, or buy a Mac!
