When I told you guys that the FBI was suggesting you reset your routers, many of you were a bit confused.
“Just read about resetting the router. My router is SAGEMCOM I haven’t a clue on how to reset it or changing my password, etc. Should I just call my internet provider, Charter, and have them help me.”
Resetting your router is as simple as finding the power button, turning it off, and then turning it back on in a couple of minutes. Or you can unplug the power cord from the router and then plug it back in after a few minutes.
How you change your password is going to depend on the router. You should have been given some paperwork by your ISP that explains how to do that. If you aren’t sure what your network password is, you need to find it. If the ISP gave you one, it’s in the paperwork. Resetting the network password normally involves going to a specific website and logging in with your current password. If you don’t have paperwork, usually the manufacturer of the router offers instructions on their website.
If you can’t find the instructions for your particular router, contact your ISP’s customer service. They should be able to walk you through it.
But it’s really best if you learn how to do it. It’s not that complicated and it’s important that you not only know your passwords, but also how to manage the settings for your particular router.
Is it sufficient to unplug and replug the router? Another tech newsletter said to use the reset feature on the back of the router. Apparently, if I stick a paperclip or something into the reset “jack,” I’ll then have to follow some sort of setup procedure. I haven’t contacted Frontier Communications yet regarding this issue. I did unplug and replug the router – several times because I had trouble re-establishing Internet access.
