It’s been a long, slow climb but Windows 10 is finally the most popular operating system out there. Windows 10 is found on nearly 41% of desktops and laptops while Windows 7 is running 38%. That’s a good thing since support for Windows 7 ends in January 2020.
Which operating systems rule the roost? Let’s check out the numbers according to NetMarketShare.
Windows is found on 87% of desktop and laptop devices. Mac OS is a distant second at just under 10%/ That leaves 2% for various Linux operating systems. Chrome OS runs about .33 of a percent of devices.
If you break it down by version of the operating system, Windows 10 is found of 41% of devices, Windows 7 on 38%, and Windows 8.1 on 4.5%. Mac OSX 10.14 and 10.13 are each take about a 4% share of devices. Incredibly, Windows XP is still hanging in there on just over 3% of devices, 5 years after Microsoft ended support. I hope none of those PCs have anything important on them.
Now, let’s talk about phones. Android is the clear leader, running on 70% of devices. iOS comes in second. It’s found on 28% of mobile devices. The tablet race is a little bit tighter. Android is still on top with close to 57% but iPad is a close second at 43%.
