Message scams

A quick warning about message scams. These work very much like email phishing scams. You’ll be sent a message on an app like Facebook Messenger or What’s App or perhaps an SMS text message on your phone.

The message will contain a link. Sometimes it claims there’s an issue with your account. Sometimes it comes from a friend’s account. A favorite ploy is to say there’s a picture or a video posted of you and that you should check it out.

If you click or tap on the link, you’ll be taken to a site that can download malware onto your device and can then turn around and send malicious spam to your friends. And make sure the young folks using messaging apps in your life know to look out for stuff like this. Younger people are actually more likely than senior citizens to fall for scams like these.
