Zoom Virtual Background

One fun feature of the Zoom video conferencing app that I haven’t mentioned yet is the ability to use a virtual background.

I will caution you that if your computer a little older or has a slower processor, you need a green screen to pull it off. Otherwise, you should be able to do it with no problem.

Start by opening the Zoom app and clicking on the icon for your account at the upper right.

Choose Settings from the drop-down menu.

Click on Virtual Background

Choose from one of the default backgrounds that comes with the app by clicking on the image.

Or click the + button to add you own from your files. Pick the image you want. Zoom suggests using images that are 1280 pixels by 720 px or 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels.

Here’s what it looks like with the background applied. Kind of fun.  Remember, if these background images are for a work meeting, try to keep it professional. But for family and friends feel free to have fun. Put yourself on the bridge of the Enterprise or anywhere your heart desires.

  1. Cyn… does the ‘virtual background’ work for an invited participant, or only for the presenter? Karl U.

  2. Usually I love your tips & I was really looking forward to trying this out – unfortunately, none of your screenshots remotely match what I see on my Windows 10 desktop or Android phone. I even signed up for a Zoom account but I still cannot find a way to use virtual backgrounds. Is this tip for Apple only?
