A reader said goodbye forever to Facebook and hasn’t looked back:
I gave up Facebook entirely in November of 2018. I went into the hospital for surgery and decided while there that I don’t need Facebook ruling my life.
They decided what I could see and when I could see it. I could not necessarily go back and see what I looked at yesterday. The “feed” was not in chronological order and was as Facebook was deciding what news and information I could get from my contacts. I said, NO! And, I stopped looking at Facebook and have not looked back.
My life if much better and I have gained two to three hours a day to use for more productive ventures. If more people would realize what a time-waster Facebook is, they would also drop this useless “service.”
Wake up people, Facebook is consuming a lot of your time and sucking you into “window peeping” while watching what people are eating, where they are eating and who they are eating with. Whoopee! They have a lot more productive things to do with their time. Stay in touch? Yes. Are there better ways? Absolutely!
You make a good point. If social media is taking up too much of your time, kicking it to the curb forever can be a game-changer.
In defense of Facebook, it has connected me with dozens of old friends I’d lost contact with for thirty plus years. I’m happy to have them back in my life. I honestly don’t think we’d take the time to catch up if we had to stop and make the time for individual phone calls or letters.
I’ve also met some people via Facebook who turned into actual real-life friends. Do I think it’s necessary for living? Hey, I grew up back when there was only one phone in the house and people still wrote letters. So, nope.
But if you’re someone who enjoys the connections you make via Facebook, I say it’s worth the time and trouble. I also suggested getting educated on how you can control what you see and who you interact with.

I would argue that is someone developed another platform similar to Facebook it likely would wipe out FB. I agree with you. I Facebook allows me to connect with long distance family. (Mom’s Twin moved down under back in’76 So I never really knew my younger cousins and their offspring until Facebook and, believe it or not, Mafia Wars. I am able to keep up to date with co-workers around the country, past classmates, and even my siblings who live less that five miles from me.
However, I totally disagree with the mindset Zuckerberg has regarding political posts. He won’t censor various politicians but will censor those who repeat verbatim what the politician said.
