Hacker poisons city’s water supply

A hacker got into the water system for a Florida city and managed to adjust the chemical levels for the system to dangerous levels.

Oldsmar, Florida City officials said it happened back on February 5. The hacker got into the system twice that day, once early in the morning and again in the afternoon.

The hacker adjusted the levels of lye in the water from 100 parts per million to 11,100 parts per million, which is considered a dangerous level. Small amounts of lye are used to treat drinking water and remove metals.

Fortunately, a sharp-eyed employee caught the second attack before any of that water was piped out to the public. Oldsmar is fairly close to Tampa where the Super Bowl was placed that same weekend.

Officials do not yet know the motive behind the attack. Several sources reported that the TeamViewer app was used to gain access to the system.
