Soul Food Online

Most of us love our mom or dad’s cooking; both of my parents are great cooks. The first time you try to make your favorite dish that they’d lovingly prepared over the years, you may have realized (like I did) that it wasn’t as easy as it looked. After some botched attempts and a lot of time on the phone asking my mom questions, I finally got the knack of it. Now I can make my mom’s pot roast with potatoes, carrots, and Yorkshire pudding.

More than that, I’ve come to really love cooking. So I really enjoy it when I find a site like this one. As the author puts it, “I started the site to preserve some of the old recipes and food traditions I learned from friends and family over the years.”

Some of the author’s favorite recipes and some featured foods are on the home page, but we’re all here for the free recipes, so let’s start with that section.

The recipes section is broken down into categories. Meats, Vegetables, Salads, Breads, and Sweets are then either broken down either into subcategories or into the recipes themselves. Best of all, these recipes well explained. My favorite is the Taffy Apple Cake. I can’t wait to make it and take it down to my mom’s. I just know she’s going to love it. It would be great with some ice cream, too.

The Food History section has articles on soul food. The first one is clearly denoted as having to register and that is because it is from the New York Times and you have to register at their site to read their stuff. Some of the link may not work because they are from newspapers, and newspapers don’t always keep articles up on their sites for very long.

Are you ready to get into your kitchen and start experimenting? I know I sure am.
