I will be the first to tell you that I didn’t inherit my parent’s mathematical brains. I started off well, but due to some odd timing in my education, I lost out on some of the major concepts of math. (Hello percentages, fractions and algebra!) My mom is currently teaching math and can actually sit and do math problems for fun (a trait that has always both bewildered and endeared me to her). But, it frustrates me so much that I don’t share this trait. There is a part of me that wants to be good at math, but it just doesn’t make sense to me.
Now there is help! I know I am not the only person out in the world that struggles with math. Both my roommate and my sister do too. For those of us who need help, there is Web Math. It can help with math for all ages, so even your children in Kindergarten through the eighth grade can use this site!
The sections are: Home, Math for Everyone, General Math, K-8 Math, Algebra, Plots & Geometry, Trig & Calculus and Other Stuff.
Home – This section will take you back to the main page. It also has a drop down menu that will quick jump you to many different kinds of problems. Some examples are: Percentages, Word Problems, Conversions and Fractions, just to name a few.
Math for Everyone – Here you will find the math that you can use in everyday life. From figuring out tips to personal finances to even the cost of electricity, this is the math that you need to get through life. Although I’ll be honest, I keep a cheat sheet in my wallet of how much to tip!
General Math – Here you get fractions, scientific notations, decimals, numbers and number crunching. Number crunching is like a calculator and you get two versions of it. One without variables and one with them. All the tips you need to use it are right there too.
K-8 – This section is for all the stuff kids learn before they go off to high school (at least in my area, where high school starts in ninth grade). They can learn number basics, fractions, ratios and there is even an Other Stuff section where they will learn about the metric system and other odds and ends that we learn before getting to algebra. I particularly like the Practice Your Math section under the Other Stuff area, where you can set it up to give you problems to solve so that you can practice.
Algebra – Here you will find everything algebra. From word problems to quadratic equations to polynomials.
Plots & Geometry – Here you not only get to learn all about geometry, but also how to graph out things on graph paper. You will also learn all about plotting and the equation of a line.
Trig & Calculus – I never made it this far in math, so a lot of what is in this section is greek to me, but it includes both trigonometry and calculus problems. In the Trig area, you have equations, right triangles and solving trigonometric expressions. In the Calculus area, you have derivatives, quotient rule, integration and 100 solved integrals.
Other Stuff – This section contains Practice Math (for Basic Math and Polynomials) and Handling Raw Numbers (Data Plotter, Standard Deviation and Histograms).
The great thing about Web Math is not only does it solve the problem you may be stuck on, but it also shows you how to do it. That way, you can really learn the method and maybe even see where you got stuck so that you don’t get stuck again on the next problem you do!
