To enter the International Perfume Museum, just click Enter. This will take you to the museum’s index page. You’ll notice that there are two navigation strips at the top and there’s a side menu. The top menu can be used for other museums, news, an FAQ page and more. I’m going to focus on the side menu though, because it is the menu for the International Perfume Museum.
You’ll also notice on this main page that there is an introduction to the perfume museum. In it, you learn all about the buildings that house it, as well as, why the location was chosen.
Raw Materials of All Kinds – This section is very interesting, because you get to learn all about the materials that make up perfume. The main page for this section briefly explains the many different types of materials, along with the synthesis to get them into a perfume state.
You can take a Virtual Tour of the Greenhouse as well. Take notice of the orange circles here. If you double click them, you can learn all about that specific plant. If you can’t get the circles to bring up the information, there is a menu off to the right side of the tour that has the names of the plants. Click the name of the plant you want to learn more about and it takes you to the information for that specific one. There will be links throughout the text about the plant you’ve chosen as well. Some will lead you to definitions of techniques, while others will take you to the perfumery’s page. You can learn a lot from these pages, so be sure to check them out!
Leading Techniques – In this section, you will learn all about how perfume is made. Click the images to go to the individual pages of the different processes. You can also take a virtual tour of the Factory. Again, double click the orange circles. This time, they will give you a close up of that piece of machinery and sometimes, with a description of what it does.
Perfume Creation – Here you will learn all about perfume’s creation, from the scent to the bottles that hold it and everything in between. I loved this section, because it was so very straight forward in presenting the information. I started off in On Smell and worked my way down the links to Perfume Classification. It was very educational. You can also use the next and back arrows on the bottom of the page to move through the sections, without being booted back to the main page.
A History of Perfume – Here you can learn about perfume from Antiquity to the 20th Century. There is a main introduction to this section and then beneath it, there is a timeline. Under each section on the timeline, you will find links to more information for that time period. Learn about how perfume was used in ancient Egypt or how the Industrial Revolution changed things!
From the Advertising to the Marketing – Where there is perfume, there will be perfume advertisement. This is even true of our culture today, where top models vie to be the face of a certain brand of perfume. In this section, you will learn how perfume is marketed and what types of advertising have been used. This section is accompanied by some lovely examples of antique perfume ads. Just click the images to see them in a larger size.
I’ve learned so much about perfume, how it is made and its history, I’ve decided that this site is definitely delightful brain food!
