Optimizing Week, Day 3 – Digg

Do you Digg? No, I’m not talking about digging holes in your backyard! I mean, do you ever use the social bookmarking site of digg.com? Well, if not, it’s a Web site anybody can use to share what they found on the Internet with the whole world. Also, with Digg, if you like a page someone else has found, you can Digg it. You dig me?! Okay, well, today I’m going to show you a few different ways you can make your Digg life that much easier!

Custom Tabs – If you have certain criteria you’re always searching for on Digg, why not make it easier for yourself? To do that, just install this Greasemonkey script and then click Customize on the header bar. Next, scroll down to the bottom and you can add your own custom tabs. To add a search, just search for it on Digg and hit Save Search. And that’s only a portion of what you can do with this extension! The link to install this script can be found here.

Comment Box Sidebar – When you select Reply to a comment on Digg, the comment box appears at the bottom of the page, which is very inconvenient. It is a lot easier to have the entry box on the side, right next to the comment. Don’t you agree?! If so, you need to get the Comment Box Sidebar and the link to install it can be found here.

Washer – If you don’t want to see stories about video games or “really funny videos,” all you have to do is block them using this Greasemonkey script. Type the word or phrase you don’t want to see into the search box and select Show Options, followed by Add HideWord. The link to install this script can be found right here.

5 Digg Mirrors – When a small Web site becomes popular through Digg, it can often slow down or perhaps not even work sometimes. That can be a real drag, but with this Greasemonkey script, it adds a few cache icons so that you can still see the Web site! This script adds little buttons as well, which you can click on to view a copy of the site. The link to install this script can be found here.

Digg Thumbs – I like to quickly preview a Web site before I visit it and this Firefox extension allows me to do that right on the Digg site. It adds a small preview box right next to the listing, which is very useful! The link to install this extension can be found here.

Digg: Stripped to the Bone – Some people don’t like to bother with all the fancy Greasemonkey scripts. If you’re one of those people, this one’s for you. It allows you to just simply read the Digg stories, with no interference. This is a Stylish script and you will need the Stylish script to use this. You can find the link to install this style here.

Reload Digg Page – I’m always interested in seeing the top stories on Digg. Often, I’ll leave the Digg page open and minimized so that when I open Digg again, I get to see the new entries that were just submitted, since the page reloads every five minutes. The link to install this script can be found here.

Smart Button – This last Digg add on is one of my favorites! It’s great for anyone who likes to submit or Digg on a lot of stories. This button goes in your taskbar and it allows you to see whether a story has been “dug” on or not. If it has, it tells you how many times as well, which is very cool! The link to install this extension can be found here.

There you go. I hope you “dig” these Digg tweaks. I’ll see you all tomorrow for yet another day of Optimizing Week!
