I have Windows XP. How can I tell if I can run Windows 8 on my PC?

With the release of Windows 8 many people will be considering upgrading. The system requirements are pretty basic for Windows 8:

  • 1 GHz processor or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2

  • 2 GB RAM / 20 GB available hard disk space

  • 1366 × 768 screen resolution

  • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM driver

  • To use touch, you need a PC that supports multitouch

  

  • Internet access (fees may apply)

  • Microsoft account required for some features

  • Watching DVDs requires separate playback software

  • Windows Media Center license sold separately

  • See the full system requirements

But how do you check if your programs and devices are Windows 8 compatible? Microsoft has been hard at work making an upgrade assistant program you can run on your computer to find out if it will support Windows 8.

  1. Remember though that the $39.99 is only as an upgrade so you have to have a valid OS on the computer to get that price. The valid OSes are Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. You could not for instance build a new computer and get Windows 8 for it for $39.99. There has been some speculation though that the Windows 8 Release Preview could serve as the valid prior OS, but I haven’t seen where anyone actually tested that.
