The quick and dirty answer is…
If you’re using an older computer, your best bet for maximum compatibility is Windows 7. Before you purchase an upgrade, though, I would highly recommend running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor. This application will verify that the hardware and software on/in your computer will work when you upgrade to Windows 7. You can download the upgrade advisor by clicking here.
Windows 8’s new interface and features work best with touch enabled computers, so upgrading older hardware to Windows 8 will result in a less-than-optimal experience. You can download the Windows 8 upgrade assistant by clicking here to verify compatibility if your set on using it, however. Windows 7, while technically being the older software, is still being implemented by many companies, and Microsoft has promised a long support cycle for updates and fixes, so don’t feel forced into Windows 8. You’ll most likely need a new computer before Windows 7 is officially phased out.

P.S. If your computer is running software older then Windows XP, it is probably a good time to upgrade. Even a low cost new computer will be far faster then a 8+ year old system.

I was so upset when I purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 and found out
that my old copy of Office would not work on this version of Windows.
I was using XP when my computer failed. I tried to buy a new laptop with Windows 7 but there were none available at the stores. I was forced to pay for another copy of Office. Even the manager of the Costco did not know this.

If you are a regular user (as opposed to a “power user”) try using Open Office instead of Office. It’s free and, unless you are writing macros, works great. I’ve been using it at home for years.
