I bought a store built desk top recently loaded with a new copy of 7, and right from new, it doesn’t want to stay in the sleep mode. I have gone through my power options and nothing seems to work. Even clicking on “sleep”, it only shuts off for a few seconds, then comes back on. Help!

Answer: It’s possible that a device or program running on your computer is waking it from slumber. Go to the Start Menu and select Control Panel.

From the Control Panel select Hardware and Sound.

Now select Power Options and choose Change when the computer sleeps.

When the new window opens, select Change advanced power settings.

About halfway down the list of options, you will find Sleep. Click on the plus sign beside it to get a list of further options. Now click the plus sign next to Allow wake timers.

Choose the option to Disable wake timers.

If that doesn’t correct the issue, you may be able to find out what keeps waking up your PC by opening the Start Menu and pulling up the Command Prompt by typing cmd followed by hitting enter. Once you have the command prompt, type in powercfg -lastwake and pressing enter.

That should bring up a Wake History Count and tell you what keeps waking up your computer.

Hope this helps your computer with its insomnia.

Just remember if you turn off allow wake timers then your anti-virus, Windows Update, and most importantly your over night backups will not be able to wake the computer and do their work in the middle of the night.

That powercfg cmd is great thanks for that. I had a problem like this several months ago and that cmd would have been nice to help me find it. Since this is an old post I guess I forgot the cmd.
I would put my laptop to sleep and then later find it wasn’t asleep. I determined that everytime I put it in the carrying case it woke up. I finally found that my wireless mouse was in the case and turned on. I assume that when I got the laptop close enough for the mouse to talk to it the mouse would say “here I am” and wake up the laptop.
I actually have wake timers disabled, and have checked sleep timers to 10 and 20 min.’s. When I click on “sleep” in the start menu, it comes right back on. It wont sleep at all…ever. The display will sleep, but after 20 min. several flashings from my DVD player wake that up. In cmd. I get “USB/ root-hub” “standard USB host controller” …sleepless in Kimberley.
Well I disbaled the timer but it still wakes up and the most I have to hint me on whats causing the wake ups is this that cane up when I tried to “Last wake”

Another thing that may help is WinSleep, a program that manages sleep schedules for your PC, and shows a timeline of when it was awake or asleep. see molliesoft.com / winsleep
When all else fails, try shutting off your WIFI (to your computer or router) in your smart phone. Then put your computer to sleep and see if that does the trick.
