How To Get Rid Of About:Blank

John from Kilmucklin, Ireland writes:

Hi guys, when I try to open a new tab on windows 7 all i get is “about:blank. When I try to change the settings on internet options, it works the way I want it to, but my problem is when I power off my PC and turn it back on again I’m greeted with this “about:blank” again. I have tried scanning my PC but this nightmare continues, any assistance would be greatly welcome.

Answer:

The good news is this isn’t a virus, error or something you need to worry about. It’s just the way to bring up a blank web page when your web browser loads. The reason this is done is to speed up the load time of your web browser and to save on bandwidth since it’s not trying to load a website.

If you would rather have a specific page open every time you start your web browser, you can change the default home page.

Internet Explorer: Click on the gear and click Internet options (or tools menu > Internet options) and delete the about:blank and type in the full website address of the page you want to load by default. For example: http://www.worldstart

Mozilla Firefox: Click the Firefox button and click options (or tools menu > Options). In the home page box type in the full website address of the page you want to load by default. For example: http://www.worldstart

Google Chrome: Click the three vertical bars then click settings (or hold down Alt and press F and click settings) and under On startup select “open a specific page or set of pages.” and then click set pages and  type in the full website address of the page you want to load by default. For example: http://www.worldstart

  2. Your solution does not work on my computer’s Internet explorer. I use Windows 7 with all updates. I have tried to change the home page but when I close the Internet options window and re open it “About Blank” is back.
