Answer:
The JXR extension is a file developed by Microsoft for higher bit depth and higher compression without quality loss for professional photographers. This image file type isn’t popular due to the wide use of Adobe products by professional photographers, which do not natively export that file type.
The file format itself presents no risk to opening, but I’d recommend using a virus scanner program on any files you receive from the internet. Image files have been known to include viruses. If you scan the file and it comes up clean, you should be OK with opening it in Windows Photo Gallery.

Thank you for this information. How do I stop this very annoying popup in Photo Gallery asking if I want to use PGallery to open JXR files in future. It doesnt matter if I click on yes or no. It keeps popping up.

just check the box that says “dont show this message again” and select click no or yes ( your choice ) pretty clear to me
