How To Pull Up A Start Menu (Almost) In Windows 8

A super quick tip for those frustrated by the lack of a Start Menu in Windows 8. There is a way to pull-up an almost-Start Menu by hitting a couple of keys.

Hit the Windows Key and the letter X on your keyboard. Below is what the Windows Key looks like:

A window will pop up in the lower left-hand side of your Metro/Modern Start Screen.

In that Window you will find a menu listing Desktop, Control Panel, File Explorer, Task Manager, Programs and more.

This may help ease some of the navigation issues with Windows 8.

  1. Struggling with new computer pre-loaded with Windows 8 (Yuck!) Thanks for the tip…every tip helps!!!

  2. I do not get this picture of the pseudo start menu when I hit Windows X. Can you tell me why not. I have Windows 8 and would love to find the start menu.

  3. This is of course not really a start menu but is useful never the less. However if I remember correctly you can get this same menu by right clicking the lower left corner of the screen, maybe only the desktop screen. I don’t have a Windows 8 computer any more, I had the consumer preview up on a spare machine but had to remove it and deploy the computer when my wife’s computer died.
