Hello Alberta. The article you referenced should also work in Windows 7, the registry key is the same. If you need help navigating and understanding the registry, check out this article from our archives. However, I will try to help out a little bit more here, as well. The problem is caused by an issue in the registry, so it should be fixed the same way in XP and Windows 7.
First, you need to go to the start menu, and in the search bar at the bottom, type regedit.
This will open up the registry. You will need to navigate to the following folder:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\
*Note, when trying to find the folders, you can type the first few letters and it will find the folders
Click on (Default) and be certain the value is {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
This should solve the problem.
If it still does not work, there is another solution, posted by Linda Yan in a Microsoft forum, which links to her Skydrive account for a file.
1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder
3. Right click on the Folder key on the left pane, and then select “Export” to backup this registry key.
4. Go to my Skydrive and download folderfix.zip file.
5. Save the folderfix.zip file on to your Desktop.
6. Right click and extract the folderfix.reg file.
7. Right click on the folderfix.reg file and then click Merge.
8. Click Yes to confirm the modification.
I have not personally tested this solution, but several people posted saying it worked for them. I hope one of these solutions help.

I had tried everything from many websites to fix this problem, but nothing seemed to work. When I saw this skydrive download, I thought, why not? I downloaded folderfix.zip and it worked! Months of frustration finally gone. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
The only problem I have with this “fix” is that a lot of us don’t like messing with the registry. I think a warning to your readers would be appropriate such as “be careful – you make a mistake in the registry and could possibly not get Windows to work!” Just a suggestion. 🙂

That is a good point. We should mention that in any article that references changes in the registry. However, in many cases, those changes are the only way to fix the problems people are having. Still, very good to note.
