How Do I Remove A Book From My Kindle App?

Jill from Northwood writes:

I have a Kindle app on my phone and I’m not sure how to remove a book once I’ve finished reading it.

Choose the book you wish to remove, then press down and hold. Giving the book a tap will open it. You want to press and hold.

A menu will pop up. You’ll be offered the choice between removing the book from the device or from the carousel (the home screen for the Kindle App). Removing it from the carousel means you won’t see the book when you open your app, but it will still be on the device. If you want to clear off space on your device, choose remove from device. You do have to remove the book from the carousel as well if you don’t want to see it.

Even if you remove the book from the device, you can still find it in your Kindle library and download it to read from the Amazon cloud at any time.

  1. thanks for this concise explanation. Thanks I finally understand what I am doing with my Kindle books.

  2. Cynthia: You came thru again with some helpful information. Can not figure out why the Kindle is not sold with a handbook/manual to help out the buyer. Quirk of Amazon I guess. Thanks again.

  3. I can’t put a big enough thank you for this tip ! Being 82, some of this new technology needs plain explanations. Thanks again !

  4. Thank you For the instructions. I was able to delete the book from the device, but I don’t have the option to delete from the carousel Like the screen shot shows. I am using the iPhone app. Do you know why is that?

  5. I have a book that shows only a cover it will not download so I can read it, and I also can not delete from my kindle app even using the steps you describe.

  6. I want to totally remove books that were purchased by accident and I don’t want them on my device OR IN MY CLOUD! LOL I want them totally deleted! Gone! And I’m not seeing how to do that. Please help! Thanks 🙂

    1. There may be another way but for that I go to “manage my kindle” on my laptop on the amazon website and delete from the list. That permanently deletes it.

  7. On the latest version of kindle that is not in the box that openers when you hold down the book – you get download, book details, add to collection. I have several books I’d like to remove from my kindle app on my iPad. Thanks

  8. TO REMOVE FROM DEVICE, LONG PRESS BOOK CHOOSE REMOVE FROM DEVICE.
TO REMOVE FROM EVER SEEING BOOK AND/OR IN COUROSEL ON DEVICE:
You MUST sign onto Amazon, your account and after logging in GO TO kindle purchases, even for free books.

You will get a listing and that way deleting here you can NOT EVER redowload again to any device and never see it in your library or cloud avalibility. Hope this helps.

  9. That’s okay for one at a time. I recently put an entire series on my kindle, now I about 80 of the things on my carousel. Any way to clean it out?

  10. As Linda stated, this no longer works. The format has changed:

“On the latest version of kindle that is not in the box that openers when you hold down the book – you get download, book details, add to collection. I have several books I’d like to remove from my kindle app on my iPad. Thanks”

    1. I have this problem too. I don’t think anyone understands that the “remove from device” option is no longer available on new Paperwhite even when we press and hold and see the screen of options. Delete is no longer an option.

  11. I want to remove book title from my kindle library on iphone 6. I didn’t want to have to go to lapttop. There should be a way, I would think. Thanks

  12. I found a way to delete Amazon books.
Go to library and scroll down to settings.
Find deregister this device and click on it.
Sign out – this removes any books downloaded from Amazon.
Also kept the books I downloaded from Smashwords.
Hope this works for other peeps too.
