Dorothy, Skype is free for making video and voice calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world. But if you want to make a call to a land line or a cell phone user who doesn’t have the Skype app installed, there is a charge. Rates actually start at a penny per minute within the United States and you can buy subscriptions for unlimited calls in the US and Canada fro $2.99 per month.
For the voice or video call to be free, you’ll need to make sure the person you are calling has a Skype account and the Skype app installed on their computer or mobile device. Remember: Video, voice and text messages to other Skype users are free. Voice calls to land lines and calls or texts to cell phone numbers (not using the Skype app) cost money.
