Why Does My Facebook Page Look Different?

First let me say, I love your newsletter.  I find it so helpful for home and the office.  I’m not a computer literate as I would like to be, but I am learning a lot thank to you and the newletters. Now for my question, I have a Windows Surface RT tablet and an Android tablet.  How to I make my homepage on face book the default when I sign onto Facebook using my tablet?  I’m not sure where it is taking me when I sign onto Facebook at the time, but it looks nothing like the homepage I see when I log on Facebook on my laptop computer.

Shado – when you log on to Facebook, you are taken to your news feed no matter which method you use to access it. But that page will look different depending on your device.

Here’s a typical Facebook page displayed using a browser.

Here’s the same Facebook news feed using the Facebook app on a Surface.

Here’s that same Facebook profile on an Android tablet.

Each of these screens in the standard news feed for Facebook, so why do they look so different? The size of the screen that the app will be viewed on. The browser version contains a lot information on one screen and can be difficult to read on a smaller monitor.  The Windows app is slightly larger, but much more touch-friendly. The Android app is sized to work with either a tablet or a phone, so it only displays one item at a time.  But you do have all of the same information available.  Tap the menu bar to see the items displayed on the left of your browser feed.

Tap the Menu bar with the “People” symbol to see the information displayed on the right of the browser page.

On your Surface, you could choose to open the Internet Explorer or other browser app and  log on to Facebook through that instead of through the Facebook App. But I would only suggest that if you plan on using a keyboard with a touchpad to navigate. The browser version of Facebook is not touch-friendly.

I would not suggest trying that on an Android tablet. Facebook does not work well through a browser on Android. As far as the appearance of each app, there is really nothing you can do to change it. The Facebook apps are optimized to work on the device they are installed on.

  1. Steve: I re-set my HP [Win 7 Home] computer to a back date and, of course, it was restored as well as backed up. I am having to serious situations. I am now gerring a large amount of pop-ups as well as ‘recommended’ d/l’s. I tried to erase programs, but a PALMALL refuses to leave. Norton helps, but not enough. I cannot access my b/u to reactivate my old ‘documents’ file nor certain programs that I also need VERY MUCH. Can you help?
