How do you remove an icon from your desktop on an iPad?
Hello Donald,
It’s actually easy to remove the icon. Simply press and hold any icon on the desktop, actually called the home screen, of the iPad. Once you have held long enough (about 2-3 seconds), all the icons will wiggle and those that can be removed have an X in the top left corner.

Tap the X, and the icon will be removed. Keep in mind that this will remove the App complete from the iPad. Or if you want to create groups of icons, like all of your games, simply drag one icon onto the other. This will create a folder that you can name whatever you’d like and you can add as many Apps as you want to this folder.

Once you are done moving the icons, press the home button to return the icons to normal.

Audra you should mention that this action doesn’t just remove the icon as it would in Windows it uninstalls the app also.
Mark,
A good point. I’ve edited the article to add this point. But, as far as I am aware, this is the only way to remove the icons. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong!) The apps can be reinstalled through the App Store pretty easily if they do want them back.
Not complete, please please follow with the way to remove the “xs” from the rest of the icons to be retained. This oversight reflects your familiarity and not the ignorance of the questioner. The questioner does not wish to be left with a mass of quvering Icons. Hope I was constructive.
Nicolo,
Good point. To stop the wiggling icons, a simple touch of the home button will turn those off. I have edited the article to show this.
