Zoom In & Make It Stick In Internet Explorer

They say you learn something new every single day, and it this job, I certainly do. A reader wanted to know if there’s a way to make the zoom stick in Internet Explorer.  He likes to read at a magnification of 125%, but every single time he shuts and reopens IE, he’s back to 100% and has to zoom in again. With a little investigation, I was able to figure it out. So, thanks for asking the question Virgil!

Let’s get started.  These instructions are for IE 11.  Since Virgil says he is  using Windows 7, if he hasn’t upgraded to IE 11, I’d suggest doing it. Open Internet Explorer and click the little gear icon in the upper-right corner of your browser.

gear

Choose Internet Options from the drop-down menu.

Select the Advanced tab.

Scroll down to accessibility and make sure there is no check mark next to Reset Zoom level for new windows and tabs. If there is, uncheck it.

Then choose OK. Open and close your browser.

OK

Now click the gear icon again and choose Zoom from the drop-down menu. Adjust the zoom to whatever size you prefer.

When you open a new tab or open the browser, the zoom size should stick. At least it worked for me. One interesting note is that some of the support from Microsoft that I found suggests actually checking the box if it’s unchecked. That didn’t work for me. I ended up having to check it, then hit OK and then go back in and uncheck it. Once I did, I was able to keep my zoom level.

One of the frustrating things about computers is that sometimes things work differently depending on the computer and the version of Windows you’re running.  With Windows 7, this can be especially tricky since there are actually 6 versions. Though most people use either Home Premium or Professional.

I hope this works for you Virgil.

  1. A much simpler way is to simply move the cursor to lower right hand corner of the screen and set view % there.

    1. My version of IE (v.11) does not have the “set view %” in the lower right corner of the screen; however, I believe that is what the person does not want to do every time – they want it to automatically use a particular magnification every time. If that works for you, perhaps the box was already checked in the options to keep the zoom setting.

  2. A much, much simpler way is to look in the far right bottom of the IE11 page for a % number (this is the zoom number). Simply set it there.
