We had a question asking if there was a simple way to label flash drives, so they could be identified at a glance. Our reader said, “to me they all look alike, little black sticks.”
Flash Drives are pretty easy to label. I do have one caution, only write or place stickers on the part of the drive that stays outside the USB port on your computer.
You could buy some small labels or stickers and write on them or color code them. A white paint marker would be a good option for permanent labeling. Some suggest color-coding with a little swipe of nail polish if you have that available. You could even write on some label or masking tape and affix it to the drive.
You might also consider consolidating several small flash drives into a larger one for ease of finding the files.

I use a Brother :Lable Maker with 3/8″ tape, Black on White. Using lower case letters give me room.
What I use for labeling flash drives is the sticky part of Post-It notes. I cut off the sticky part, and also cut it to length if necessary. That provides a usually-yellow surface to write on. It adheres adequately to the flash drive for my use, but probably not if you carry it with you.
1. Connect it to the USB port on a Windows computer.
2. Go to the Start menu Search field and enter either CMD or Command and hit Enter.
3. Type: label “whatever you want to name your drive (max 11 characters)” without quotes and hit Enter.
Now whatever you named your drive will appear in My Computer.
I don’t like adhesive labels. Instead of buying 1000 string tags, cut tags the size you want from an old manila folder. Test a punched hole to make sure tag is wide enough (so the hole won’t tear through). To avoid tangling use fine wire or telephone wire. Label both sides of tag. Color code with a fat marker line or with the color ink used for label.
