Microsoft is shaking things up when it comes to its gaming business. The company announced that there would now be backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One console.

What that means is that if you bought thousands of dollars of games over the years for your Xbox 360 console, you’ll be able to play many of them on the Xbox one. Previously you either had to give up your old games or keep both consoles operating.

Now the company says users will soon be able to play many Xbox 360 titles on their Xbox One for no additional charge.  The company says it’s the most-requested feature from fans, plus it’s also something the PS4 doesn’t offer. Initially, Microsoft believed the feature just wasn’t possible, but they ended up creating an emulator that would run the Xbox 360 inside the the Xbox one. Much in the same way you can use an emulator to run Windows programs inside the Linux operating system. The only catch is that games that you won’t be able to plug in Xbox 360 game-specific peripherals since it is a virtual operating system.

The feature will launch in the fall and support a collection of Xbox 360 titles in both digital and disc format. The company also plans to keep releasing Xbox 360 titles, but this could convince many users to make the jump to the more expensive Xbox One.

This is the initial list of titles:

  • A Kingdom for Keflings
  • A World of Keflings
  • Alien Hominid HD
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Banjo-Tooie
  • BattleBlock Theater
  • Defense Grid
  • Geometry Wars Evolved
  • Hexic HD
  • Jetpac Refuelled
  • Kameo
  • Mass Effect
  • N+
  • Perfect Dark
  • Perfect Dark Zero
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Toy Soldiers
  • Toy Soldiers: Cold War
  • Viva Piñata
  • Viva Piñata: TIP
  • Zuma

Members of the Xbox One Preview program can access these games right now, they’ll be available for other users later in the fall.

Microsoft promises at least 100 by Christmas with hundreds more to come. Users can look under My Games and Apps on their Xbox one and their titles should already be there. They will also be able to play against friends online whether they are using an Xbox 360 or an Xbox One.

That’s not the only way the company is changing the way it sees gaming. Windows 10 users will be able to stream games from their Xbox One to their Windows 10 tablet or PC and to control the Xbox using their Xbox app.
