I’ve had this question from more than one Windows tablet user like Brian from Ireland, “I have a Surface running windows Rt 8.1. What is Microsoft’s position re upgrades? Windows 10 etc?”

I’m afraid I have bad news for you, Brian. The RT operating system is not available for upgrade to Windows 10. First of all, a device built for the RT system probably couldn’t handle the system requirements for the full Windows 10 and secondly, Microsoft has given up on the idea of the RT OS and is now installing full versions of Windows on its tablets.

Unfortunately, you’re right about the windows surface RT not being upgradeable. Whoever had the bright idea to have the OS as firmware in the first place?
However, windows 10 itself appears to be almost endlessly portable to anything from a windows smartphone (where most of the OS is in the cloud) all the way to the largest firebreathing mainframe server, just not to the RT or any other device that has it’s OS on a chip. Windows might conceivably come out with a firmware upgrade sometime in the future but since they’ve decided to disavow all knowledge of the RT, it’s doubtful. I’ve been playing with windows 10 for over three months in all of it’s many beta evolutions. It’s up to build 10162 now and ready to meet it’s advertised July 29 release date. This is without a doubt the most flexible and forgiving windows yet. I love it!
