Dorrine has a question about videos. “I have a Canon Powershot camera that I often take videos on. When I download to my computer it makes them Quick Time Movies. My question is “How do you turn the volume off to post a video, say FB for instance?” I want the movie to be silent. Thanks! I’m an avid fan!”
Dorrine, the issue is that a digital file is one whole entity. You can turn parts of the file itself off or on. If you want silent videos, you either need to take them without any sound when you shoot the video. (most cameras do offer an option to turn the sound on or off) or you need to edit that file in a non-linear editing program that will allow you to remove the sound.
Fortunately, there is a good free option that’s probably already on your PC, Microsoft Movie Maker. You can find it by searching for Movie Maker in your start menu. If you don’t already have it installed, you can download it for free by clicking here.
Open Movie Maker then select New project.
Choose Add videos and photos.
Select the video you wish to edit.
It will display in your project.
Click the Edit tab and select Video volume.
Drag the slider bar down to no sound.
Then choose Save movie.
The program will give you a guide as to what type of file format you need based on what you plan to do with the project. You can even choose Publish movie to save directly to social media.

I use Movie Maker a lot. Is there a way to remove/overwrite the original sound on the video and replace it with other sound, eg, music?
