A reader wants to know: “Just what do I have to order to use Cortana?”
The answer is more than likely, nothing at all. But let’s check it out. Cortana is the virtual assistant that comes with Windows 10. “She” will allow you to use voice commands to open programs and compose e-mails, notes and calendar events. She’ll look up things on your PC or on the Internet and give you the latest sports scores and news.
Once you have Windows 10 installed on your PC, you’ll need two things to use Cortana. First, you’ll need a microphone. Most laptops have built-in microphones, but if your PC does not, you’ll need to purchase a microphone or some headphones that come with a microphone.
If you want to hear Cortana, you’ll need to have speakers of some kind. Again, laptops generally have built-in speakers, but you may need a set for a desktop if you don’t already have sound.

Actually, you don’t need anything to use Cortana as long as you don’t mind not talking to “her” or hearing from “her.” She’ll work fine with text just like previous versions of Search. Only if you want to talk to her do you need a microphone. Personally, I don’t really want her to listen to the things I say to my computer!
