Over the course of the past month, my 70-year-old aunt had her Facebook wall flooded with inappropriate posts. At first I didn’t think much of it, convincing myself that her shaky hands were to blame. But after noticing a timing pattern of each inappropriate post, I decided to investigate.

What I found after a couple of hours of looking through her wall, surprised me. She was being spammed by spammy click-bait apps linked to her Facebook account and didn’t even know it. Soon I picked up the phone and explained to her that I’d seen a number of 2 AM posts with titles like “What this girl did next will blow your mind..” and “How to last longer..”. She was mortified and replied that she’d never done any of this. I told her I knew that and I wanted to help her out. She agreed, and we proceeded to ‘sanitize’ her wall.

If you are a victim of something like this, here’s what you should do.

1. Log into your Facebook account.

Find a spammy post and note down the name of the app spamming your wall.

4. Scroll through your apps and look for the app that’s auto-posting on your wall.

5. Click ‘X’ and then the ‘Remove’ button to get rid of it.

I recommend you go through the entire list of apps connected to your Facebook account and remove the ones that you don’t use anymore or are unsure of.

You can also ensure that your friends and family are safe by educating them on how to remove malicious apps when you see a spammy post on their wall.
