Apple has a new TV app for iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV streaming boxes coming in December,  that the company says “provides one place to access TV shows and movies, as well as a place to discover new content to watch.”

The idea behind the app is that it can search all of the other video apps on your device at once to help you find programming from multiple streaming services. It’s like a TV Guide for your phone. Plus you’ll be able to access programs and movies from different apps right from the TV app.

You can’t quite get to everything yet. If you want to start playing a Netflix movie, you’ll have to exit the TV app and you won’t be able to search Amazon Prime content. Apple says the app is a work in progress, and they still haven’t gone into detail about how much access you’ll have to content that’s not part of your iTunes library, even though that seems to be the entire point of the new app.

Users will also be able to tune into selected live news and sporting events using the voice controls for Siri.  You can simply tell Siri that you want to watch the Ohio State game or ask which games are on.

DirectTV and DIS subscribers will be able to sign in once and have access to paid content in any apps that are connected to their pay-TV subscriptions.  Apple says the app is a work in progress, so expect new features to be announced at a later date.
