A reader is having an issue with his browser. “Google Chrome changed something in their security that (1) blocked the use of Adobe Flash Player and (2) prevented my library from processing requests for books. The first was annoying but I could live with it. The second was devastating and has me in the process of changing from Chrome to either Edge or Internet Explorer. I wonder if others have experienced this problem…. THANKS for listening!”

Due to security concerns, Chrome automatically disables Flash. But there’s hope.  First, type chrome:plugins in the address bar of your browser and press enter.


Then look for Adobe Flash. Tick the box to allow Flash. Previously, you might have seen an option to allow Flash on a case by case basis, but that seems to be gone now.


As for the library issue, I don’t have enough details to know what’s causing the problem. It could be a flash issue or perhaps a Java issue.  Or ou may just need to clear the cache in Chrome.  If that doesn’t help, you’ll want to check with the library to see if there are any known issues with the Chrome browser. Or perhaps the library is having some type of web issue.

If the issue is Chrome working with older plug-ins like Flash Player and Java, you won’t want to look to Edge as your new browser. Internet Explorer would be a better choice.
