Welcome to Digital Harlem. This website presents a collection of information drawn from legal records, newspapers, archival and published sources to help create picture of Harlem from 1915 to 1930.
When you arrive at the site, I recommend reading the Welcome pop-up, because it explains not only what the site is about and how to use it. Once you’ve read it, you can close it with the X button in the top right corner of the pop-up.
At the top of the map you’ll find the years 1920, 1925, and 1930. If you click on these it will show the borders of the black settlement for each year, a combination of the three, or all three at once. It is really interesting to see how quickly the community grew over a span of 10 years.
You can use the left side menu to search for events, places, and people. You can use the right side to add layers to the map and filter content.
Another great section of information you should check out to help you navigate the site is the How To option. This will open another drop down that offers advice on how to search for specific events, people, places, and more.
This is an interesting way to explore the past. Check it out for yourself today!
