Why Does File Explorer Look Different?

When I opened up File Explorer the other day, the layout was different from my usual view and I was irritated. I talk a good tech game, but I get as cranky as anyone else when something changes. The navigation pane that allows me to navigate My PC was missing on the left side. All I could see were my Frequent folders and my Recent Files.

The address bar at the top was set to Quick accesss.

If I clicked there, I get a drop-down menu.

I could click on other folders or libraries. But just one at a time.

To restore my usual view, I needed to click the View tab at the top of File Explorer and then click on Navigation pane.

Then click Navigation pane.

My previous view was restored. All was well.

  1. I must be doing something wrong. My Windows Explorer still defaults to Recent files on the right-hand side. I was trying to get it to default to Desktop or Documents.

  2. Thanks so much for this! I have watched so many YouTube videos and none of them helped at all. Finally I am back to where I want to be.
