FancyZones is a free utility that allows you to customize the layout of open windows on your PC’s desktop. You can already resize and arrange open windows, that’s called “snapping.”

FancyZones makes it easy by offering custom templates. To use FancyZones, you must first download Windows 10 PowerToys. PowerToys is a collection of utilities that allows you to customize Windows 10.

Earlier in the week, I showed you how to download and install Windows 10 PowerToys. (Click here to read that article)

Once PowerToys is installed, you can open FancyZones by pressing the Windows Key + ` (that’s the single back quote key normally to the left of the 1 key.)

You can also click the PowerToys icon in the Start Menu.

Then click on Launch layout editor.

When it opens, you can select between multiple layouts or create one of your own.

Let’s start with my messy un-fancied desktop layout with multiple windows.

First, I’ll select the Focus template.

Then, just close or minimize FancyZones. Hold down the shift key and drag your open windows into the zones.

Here are all my open windows lined up.

Here’s what it looks like with the Columns layout.

To create and save a custom template, select Create new layout.

Name your layout and choose between a grid layout or a canvas layout that allows your zones to overlap. Then click Create.

Drag the lines to create your custom look and then save.

Here’s what my custom grid looks like.

Click No layout to go back to the way it was.
