Smart phone apps that edit photos are very popular. A reader is looking for an alternative.
“I have a Window Dell computer and no other devices. Working with family photos is my all time favorite past time. I googled info whether or not it was possible to download the Prisma App onto my PC. There were several different ways to do this using things like Arc Welder, Android Emulator, Nox app Player and Bluestacks. Totally confusing to me! I was wondering if you would address how to get Prisma unto a PC and how to edit photos with it. If you have already covered this, would you please send me the link for this info. Thanks so much!”
Prisma is an app designed for Android and iPhones. You could try running it on your Windows 7 PC using an emulator program for running apps. Windows 11 will also soon introduce the capability to run some Android apps. But there’s no guarantee that’s going to work very well and Prisma really isn’t build to be used as a desktop app, so it might not work very well even if you could get it to run.
A better solution would be to find a program designed for use with a desktop. Finding something as simple that has all the cool effects of Prisma could be difficult. And truly, if you really enjoy taking and playing with photos, you might want to consider a smartphone. There’s no better device in the world for the casual photographer to have fun with than a smartphone. I’ll highlight some web apps that work with Windows 7 (or any supported version of Windows or Mac).

You can upload images and apply a number of photo effects for free.
BeFunky.com also has some great artistic effects, but those are all now part of their paid Plus service. That service costs $9.99 a month or $58 for the year and could be worth it for the variety of effects and the simplicity of use.

Paint.net is a good, free, computer based program for editing all kinds of images. I’ve used it for many years.
