Yesterday, I told you about the Opera browser’s private browsing mode. Today, we’ll take it a step further and check out their free Virtual Private Network or VPN.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is an encrypted connection between your computer and a VPN server on the internet. It is private and no one can see what websites are being visited. Even if they could intercept your internet connection and spy on it, the encryption makes it look like random data. Your ISP will not be able to track you.
You can download the Opera browser for free at this link: https://www.opera.com/
Once installed, open Opera. Go to the Opera menu and select Settings.
Now click on Advanced. Under Privacy & security, choose Features.
Slide the VPN to the on position.
A VPN can slow your speed down, so you do have the option of bypassing it when searching and whether or not you want it to start automatically when you open the browser.
When the VPN is active, you’ll see an icon at the left of the address bar.
Not only are you anonymous, your internet connection is encrypted through a VPN. No-one knows who you are and no-one can track your web browsing activities. Double protection!
Click on the VPN for more info. From here, you can slide the toggle to turn the VPN off and monitor how much data you’ve used.
It is possible to go even further to cover your tracks and you can make it look like you live in a different country!
Click Optimal location at the bottom of the VPN box and select a country from the list. Choose Europe for instance, and it will look like you just moved to Europe to anyone tracking your location. With a private browsing window, VPN encryption, and changing your location, your browsing activities are your own affair a no-one else’s.
I tried using a VPN; Then I got my homepage in a foreign language I didn’t recognize; once my homepage was giving me all the Canadian news, etc.I haven’t use the VPN since.
