As many of you know from reading my articles, I worked in television for a couple of decades as a producer/editor (which has the nifty title of preditor). One thing I can tell you about good video editing software is that it is expensive.
That’s why I wanted to show you Lightworks. This is professional-quality editing software that’s been used to edit films like Pulp Fiction, The Wolf of Wall Street, The King’s Speech, and more. It’s even won an Emmy for its contribution to technology and engineering. Not too shabby.
There are free and pro versions available, but I wouldn’t worry about getting the paid version unless you’re actually producing something for Hollywood. AND you can download for Windows, Mac, or Linux!
Video pros will find the interface quite familiar, but even if you’re a beginner, there are tons of videos and other resources that can help you learn. It’s free, so all you’ll have to invest is time. Click here to visit the Lightworks website.
You’ll have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, past the two paid version of the software to find the free option. If you decide to download, just click the Download button.
Once you create a free Lightworks Account, you’ll receive an email with a quick-start guide and a link to your account dashboard. From there, you can choose which version you wish to download.
Once you hit the Download button, you can choose to run the exe program or save it to downloads and launch later.
When you launch the installer, you can pick your preferred language.
When the set-up Wizard begins, just follow the instructions.
You can choose what parts of Lightworks you wish to install, but unless you’re doing it as a pro and are really familiar with what you need, just go ahead and stick with the defaults.
You’ll get an option to pick a machine, but unless you are doing this on a professional level where multiple people will be working on the project, just type in the number 1 and click Install.
The installation will take a few minutes.
Once the installation is finished, open Lightworks up and you’re ready to start a project.
