DuckDuckGo search engine

Google may be the biggest (and arguably the best) search engine out there, but there are other alternatives. And I’m not just talking about big names like Yahoo or Bing.  DuckDuckGo has been around for around a decade and offers a more private alternative to Google.

The folks at DuckDuckGo promise to never collect any of your personal information. They don’t store your browsing history and they don’t sell it to advertisers. As they say, “We don’t track you – period.”

You can go to their website or add the DuckDuckGo search bar to the browser of your choice.  You can use DuckDuckGo as your default search engine in Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari.  Now don’t click the bar to Add DuckDuckGo to your browser unless you’re sure you want to use it for searches. You can play around and try it out first before deciding.

Using DuckDuckGo is just like using Google. Just type what you’re looking for into the search box and click the magnifying glass or hit enter.

Your results will appear. Just click on them to go to the page. Here, I am!

As with Google and Yahoo, sponsored results appear first. They are marked with a little square that says AD. (BTW thanks for the sponsored result, Amazon!)

Click on the tabs at the top to filter results by images, videos, or shopping. Notice that you do have safe search options to filter out anything that might be inappropriate. Images can be filtered by size, types, layout, and even color. And you can also search region.

Videos can be filtered by duration, resolution, and license.  Click this link to check it out:  https://duckduckgo.com/

DuckDuckGo is also available as a mobile browser for Android or iPhone.

  1. THanks for the additional, valuable information on Duck Duck Go, which originally read like a useful tool. It wasn’t clear it was safe.
