Office with a Chromebook

Many people have chosen Chromebooks as an often less-expensive and sometimes easier alternative to laptops.

A Chromebook looks like a laptop, but behave more like a tablet. It’s especially popular in educational settings. These lightweight devices typically have little hard drive storage space and are intended to be used as an Internet appliance, meaning that they depend heavily on being connected to a high-speed connection.

You can’t run typical Windows programs on them, instead, you’ll look to the Chrome store, or in some cases, to the Google Play Store to find apps.

Chromebooks are intended to be used with Google’s online office suite that’s part of Google Drive. But there is a way to use Office.

You can use the Chrome browser to go to Office Online and work there using the free version of Office apps. If you have an Office 365 subscription, you’ll find there are additional features available.

In the past, if your Chromebook was capable of running Android apps, you could go to the Google Play Store and download the free apps for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive. However that feature was discontinued last year.
