A reader wants to know if it’s possible to open a Gmail account without a cell phone.
“Is there a way around the lack of a cell phone connection to sign up for Gmail. I cannot get the verification text needed to open an account on a desktop.”
You bet. You don’t actually need a phone number to sign up for Gmail. Let’s check it out. When you go to gmail.com, you’ll see an option to log in or create a new account. Choose Create account.

Select personal use.

Enter your name, pick a username, and select a password before hitting Next.

When the option for a phone number comes up, leave it blank. You’ll note that the phone number is optional. Just use a different email address as your recovery option and create your account.
