The private pharmacy records of nearly 6 million Americans were exposed by a data breach that affected PharMerica. PharMerica is a company that provides data service to thousands of medical facilities and pharmacies across the United States.
According to the company, a ransomware gang targeted their servers back in March and were able to access private records with information like names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information, and even medication lists.
PharMerica says they discovered the breach on March 21.
The company says it’s not aware of any fraud or identity theft that’s happened as a result of the breach and says it’s making every effort to notify those who have been affected by the attack.
They advise individuals to stay alert and watch for any suspicious activity on their accounts. It’s also a good idea to be wary of any unexpected calls relating to your medical information.
As always, turning on multi-factor authentication can help protect your accounts from hackers and it’s not a bad idea to freeze your credit.
